Coach Carter is the dream that has become reality.
As a little boy growing up in Dallas, TX, Coach Carter was always the smallest in his class, the smallest on the basketball team, the smallest on the football team, and this continued as he became the starting point guard and team captain on the Men’s Basketball team at the University of Dallas.
In the corporate world he was often the youngest leader among his peers and this often led to his ideas and thoughts not being valued by some of his peers and some of his supervisors. The experience of being doubted led Coach Carter to establish an unwavering confidence in himself.
Coach Carter went on to establish an unprecedented 22 year retail career. Coach Carter spent 14 years with the world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart. Coach Carter quickly became a rising star with an inspiring leadership style and within the first two years of joining Wal-Mart, Coach Carter established a reputation as a turnaround leader, taking on the challenge of turning around opportunity stores in challenging communities. Achieving the role of district manager, Coach Carter was responsible for as many as 11 supercenter stores in inner city Dallas, which employed 3,800 associates, and generated annual sales exceeding $739 million.
Coach Carter extended his retail career with Ross Dress For Less which is the #1 off price retailer in the United States and where he began as a district manager. Coach Carter once again established a reputation as a turnaround leader who had upward mobility. Coach Carter took on the challenging assignments his peers did not want and the greatest challenge of all was when he relocated his family to Chicago to assist Ross in opening a new market. From his proven track record of developing his team and delivering phenomenal results, Coach Carter was promoted to the role of director where he is responsible for 75 stores in the states of Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. As a director, Coach Carter leverages his business acumen, strategic agility, effective communication, and servant leadership style to assist Ross in its growth and sustainability in the retail industry.
Along this historic career, Coach Carter experienced many challenges that could have halted his career. Instead, Coach Carter realized that the challenges were preparing him to be the leader he is today and the challenges would allow him to help other leaders navigate through career and life challenges.
